Former Olympian Melissa Hoskins died in a tragic accident outside her Adelaide home after a confrontation with her husband, professional cyclist Rohan Dennis, in December 2023. On Wednesday, Dennis was handed a suspended sentence after pleading guilty to a charge of creating a likelihood of harm in connection with her death.
The fatal accident
On December 30, 2023, a heated argument between Dennis and Hoskins escalated outside their Medindie home. During the dispute, which was reportedly about home renovations, Hoskins jumped onto the bonnet of Dennis’s car as he attempted to leave. According to court documents, Dennis continued to drive for about 75 metres at a speed of approximately 20 km/h (12.4 miles per hour), with his wife on the bonnet.
At an intersection, Hoskins reached for the car door handle, and it was then that Dennis accelerated, unaware that Hoskins had been holding onto the car. The court heard that she fell from the bonnet, sustaining fatal injuries.
Judge Ian Press, during Dennis’s sentencing, said that the act of driving with Hoskins on the car’s bonnet was dangerous. “Driving at any speed when a person is on the bonnet is an inherently risky and dangerous act,” Judge Press noted, emphasizing that Dennis’s actions had created a risk of harm to his wife.
Legal proceedings and sentence
Following the tragic incident, Dennis was initially charged with dangerous driving, driving without due care, and endangering life. However, in December 2024, he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of creating a likelihood of harm, after prosecutors dropped the more serious charges, including dangerous driving causing death and aggravated driving without due care.
On May 14, 2025, Dennis was sentenced to 17 months in prison. However, the sentence was suspended on the condition that he enter a two-year good-behaviour bond, meaning he will not serve jail time. Additionally, Dennis was banned from driving for five years.
In court, Judge Press acknowledged the profound nature of the tragedy, stating, “To describe the consequences of the events on 30 December 2023 as tragic really does not do justice to the grief, the anguish, and the turmoil those events have brought into the lives of those who knew and loved your wife.” The judge also clarified that Dennis was not criminally responsible for causing Hoskins’s death, stating, “You are not to be sentenced for causing the death of [Ms Hoskins], you are not charged with causing it.”
The judge accepted that Dennis had shown remorse and a sense of responsibility for his actions, recognizing the emotional toll the situation had taken on him. “I accept you have anguished over what could have been different if you had acted in some other way,” Judge Press said.
Family reaction
Melissa Hoskins’s parents, Peter and Amanda Hoskins, spoke publicly outside the court after the sentencing. They expressed mixed emotions, acknowledging the difficulty of the situation while also recognizing the necessity of moving forward.
Peter Hoskins said, “It’s now time for us to move on, which would be Melissa’s expectations of us. Clearly, we want to continue to be an integral part of their children’s lives and their future.” He also addressed the need for a respectful relationship with Dennis, adding, “With respect to Rohan , as hard as it’s going to be, it’s important that we also have a well-mannered relationship with him.”
Amanda Hoskins, visibly upset, echoed her husband’s sentiments. “We miss Melissa terribly. She was someone really special,” she said, reflecting on the painful loss of their daughter. Despite the overwhelming grief, Peter Hoskins emphasized the importance of focusing on the children’s well-being, stating, “We’ve got to remember there’s two people caught up in this tragedy… who have lost their mum. For them to then go and lose their dad… I don’t think that would be ideal at all. Their health and wellbeing is more important than a period of incarceration.”
Dennis’s career and the ongoing impact
Rohan Dennis, a two-time world champion in the team pursuit and a silver medalist at the 2012 London Olympics, was also a prominent figure in road cycling. He made headlines in 2015 when he wore the yellow jersey at the Tour de France after winning the opening time trial. He retired from professional cycling two years ago. Dennis, now the sole carer for their two young children, faced the painful reality of his actions while still grappling with the loss of his wife.
Hoskins, a decorated track cyclist, had represented Australia at both the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympics, competing in the team pursuit. The couple married in 2018, and their two children now face life without their mother.
Following the sentencing, Dennis’s defense lawyer, Jane Abbey KC, noted that Dennis had cooperated with authorities and expressed remorse. The judge emphasized that the incident was a tragic one for all involved, acknowledging that Dennis’s competitive nature may have played a role in his decision to leave during a heated argument. “Some of the personality traits that you used to your advantage when competing at an elite level may not always be appropriate in other settings,” Judge Press said.
Moving forward
The tragic death of Melissa Hoskins has left both families and the cycling community in mourning. As the Hoskins family looks toward the future, they have expressed gratitude for the support they've received and emphasized the importance of preserving their daughter’s legacy. "We’ve got to take time to process what happened before focusing on moving forward,” Peter Hoskins said.
Dennis, while accepting the legal consequences of his actions, now faces the responsibility of raising his children and continuing with his life under the shadow of a tragedy that has irrevocably altered their family.
As the case comes to a close, both families reflect on the heavy emotional toll of the situation, with Peter Hoskins summarizing, “Clearly, we want to continue to be an integral part of their children’s lives and their future.”
