Sant Dnyaneshwaranchi Muktaai Movie Review : A good watch with the entire family
Critic's Rating: 3.5/5
A film about Sant Dnyaneshwar, the seminal saint and writer from Marathi Literature, hasn't been made in decades. Sant Dnyaneshwaranchi Muktaai is a deep dive into the history of the saint, revered by millions, and his times. There are different accounts of the life of Sant Dnyaneshwar and compiling them itself is a mammoth task. This has been masterfully achieved by director Digpal Lanjekar, who has written an homage to the spirit of the saint. The heartfelt storyline offers multiple emotionally charged scenes that moisten the eyes.
In contrast to the trend of jingoistic stories that are all about puffery, Sant Dnyaneshwaranchi Muktaai is a genuine repository of the saints. The focus is kept on their spiritual journey which, coupled with the stellar music from Devdutta Baji and Avadhoot Gandhi, recreates a strong spiritual experience.
The casting is a key win for the film with actors fully embodying their roles. The set design and costumes are very well done, but the cinematography and VFX are nothing to write home about. The film boasts of a power packed line-up with cameos from notable actors from the Marathi industry.
Sant Dnyaneshwaranchi Muktaai is a good watch with the entire family and offers a lesson of the story of the saints who inspired a new school of thought and a spiritual upheaval.
